5 Signs Your Aging Parent May Need In-Home Care Support

For many families, the decision to seek in-home care for a loved one doesn't come all at once. It builds gradually. A missed meal here, a fall scare there.. until one day the question becomes impossible to ignore.
If you're wondering whether your parent or loved one might need additional support at home, here are five signs worth paying attention to.
1. CHANGES IN PERSONAL HYGIENE:
If you've noticed your loved one is wearing the same clothes repeatedly, skipping showers, or letting grooming habits slip, this is often one of the first visible signs that daily tasks are becoming difficult to manage alone. It's rarely about preference. It's about physical or cognitive ability.
2. UNEXPLAINED WEIGHT LOSS OR MISSED MEALS
Cooking requires planning, energy, and coordination. When these become challenging, seniors often skip meals or rely on easy but nutritious foods. Check the refrigerator, pantry, and expiration dates on a visit. Significant weight loss is a signal that nutrition support is needed.
3. INCREASED FORGETFULNESS OR CONFUSION
Occasional forgetfulness is normal with aging. But forgetting to take medications, missing appointments, leaving stove burners on, or getting confused about familiar people or places may indicate something more serious and a safety risk at home.
4. DIFFICULTY WITH MOBILITY OR RECENT FALLS
According to the CDC, falls are the leading cause of injury-related death among adults 65 and older, with nearly 3 million older adults treated in emergency departments for fall injuries each year.
5. WITHDRAWAL FROM ACTIVITIES AND SOCIAL LIFE
Research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that social isolation is associated with a 50% increased risk of dementia and significantly higher rates of depression among older adults.

If you recognized one or more of these signs, you're not alone — and there are options. A free in-home consultation is a simple, no-pressure first step to understanding what level of support might help.
